Tooth or Consequences ®

A few people have asked me about the newsletter we have written for years called Tooth or Consequences ®, and about the plaque in our hallway. It goes like this: years ago, when I was a youngster, my family and I would watch a TV game show called Truth or Consequences. It involved contestants responding to trivia questions, and if they answered wrong they had to perform an embarrassing stunt. Thus, Tooth or Consequences ® seemed like the perfect name for my dental newsletter, as it had this certain feel of nostalgia and playfulness that reminded me of my youthful days. After hearing about how Los Angeles Lakers head coach Pat Riley trademarked his famous “Three-Peat” slogan in the late 1980s, I was inspired to do the same. I went ahead and filed for a federal trademark for Tooth or Consequences ®, and the plaque on my wall represents the trademark we were granted. You also may have seen the phrase used in various publications with advertisements for dental hygiene products. This means I granted them permission to use it based on terms we both agreed to. That is the basic story of Tooth or Consequences ® .
