Vitamin D is a very important vitamin for certain body functions. We know it is essential for helping the body absorb phosphorous and calcium which is essential for strong bones and developing teeth. It also helps regulate our immune system and studies have shown people with high levels of Vitamin D were less affected severely by the Covid virus. It may also protect against certain types of heart disease by reducing inflammation in our blood vessels. Some studies have also shown that low levels of Vitamin D may also affect our moods with depression being one symptom. Some sleep research studies have also shown that Vitamin D supplementation has helped patients with sleep disturbances by 25%. An interesting finding with dental implants recently will be discussed below.
What is the ideal level of Vitamin D in our body? Well, it is usually based on the age of an individual and the recommended level has been rising thru the years. I believe for an adult a level of 40-60 ng/ml of Vitamin D is ideal though one should check with their physician.
Some studies have shown that 65% of the population have levels below 30ng/ml and many health care providers consider that deficient. There have been studies that have shown an increased rate of immediate dental implant failure with low levels of Vitamin D. I usually recommend, if low levels are present, a dosage of 50mcg(2000iu) of Vitamin D3 twice daily with meals. This level should be followed by their physician to make sure an optimal level is obtained. Since dental implants are becoming more prevalent today one should make sure their levels are optimal.
